claimsplanet joined an armada of boats on the 29th June, as their team sailed Luella 2 around the Isle of Wight for the Round the Island race, the biggest yacht race in the world and the country’s fourth largest sporting event.
The 88th annual race saw 1,210 entries contend with fluctuating wind speeds from every direction, resulting in just over 250 boats completing the race before the 10:30 deadline. But the spirit of the race was strong throughout, even if the winds weren’t and the claimsplanet team put their all into circumnavigating the Isle of Wight as rapidly as they could.
claimsplanet’s Karen Baker explained: “We started really well at 8:10, crossing the start line with approximately 115 yachts in our group. We were sailing really well for the first 2.5 hours and then the wind dropped as we approached the needles. Once round the needles the wind was a force 4-5, enabling a sail speed of 7-8 knots until on the Bembridge approach where the wind died again and we went nowhere for over an hour. After much thought and with no evidence of improving conditions, we decided to retire at 18:30”.
Karen added: “The event was immense fun though and we worked our hardest to get the most out of the inconsistent winds. The claimsplanet brand was proudly on display throughout, with our flag raised at full mast”.
