When it comes to filing a homeowners insurance claim, it usually means that something terrible has happened and you or your home needs help.
However, sometimes obtaining this help from your insurance company can seem like a hard and confusing process.
But, it doesn’t have to be hard. Today I am going to go over how the average home insurance claims’ process works, and the best way to get through the process fast and easy.
I’m sure you all know the saying ”If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.” Well, this is exceptionally true for any type of claims filing process, especially one for your home.
Make sure that you have digital copies of all of your files stored online, secured and private.
Get any of the original policies scanned into your computer and upload them to something like Dropbox or even Google Drive.
You don’t want to be in a position where you don’t have any information, and you don’t know what numbers to call.
Know What Your Policy Covers
The worst thing you can do is file a claim with your homeowner’s insurance company, and you don’t know what the policy covers.
The reason this is important is that you could miss out on your homeowner’s plan covering something that you didn’t know was included.
For instance, if you have a tenant in part of your home and neither of you are able to occupy the house due to a covered loss.
The homeowner’s insurance company may actually cover the cost of their rent and your mortgage until your home is back up and running.
But if you didn’t know this was covered and filed a general claim, it could be missed.
Download The App
Almost any insurance company that is serious about being around in the near future is probably going to have some sort of app.
While the app might not actually store anything outside of your policy number, some companies allow you to file the claim right from your phone.
You are even able to take pictures of the damage and send them in as part of the claims process.
Learn Your Company’s Claim Process
This might sound crazy, but most of us have no clue what is needed to file a claim with an insurance company.
You don’t know which documents you may need, and usually, we don’t know where the documents are, when we do find out that we need them.
Maybe your insurance company prefers email over fax and things that are faxed in may be processed at a slower rate.
It is essential to reach out to your insurance company and learn the steps you need to take to file your home insurance claim.
The above steps are very actionable and can be done right now… So, what are you waiting for?
It’s time to get serious about the claims process for any type of insurance you have, it could mean the difference between a hard and long process or an easy and short one.
